Minor Ruins
Waste, minor ruins, abandoned fragments. Anonymous remnants of lives once lived.
What is cast aside becomes a relic.
Photography becomes a form of excavation, an archaeology of the present.
Traces worn underfoot are unearthed, brought back into view, and granted a fleeting dignity.
A bittersweet portrait of Arles, told through what remains.
Among its discarded things, stories begin to surface; within these ordinary ruins lies a shared memory.
In Arles, I turned my attention to the things we discard in everyday life.
Each morning, I would set out to gather what I found in the streets, or ask local shopkeepers to give me objects they no longer needed.
From these collected fragments, I composed still lifes, a way of looking anew at what would otherwise go unnoticed or be cast aside.
I am deeply grateful to Marguerite Bornhauser for her generosity and kindness throughout the making of this work.
